What’s Going On In The Shop

Kyle – Spent 5 days in LA at the YouTube Space for the NextUp training.  Filmed a turning video in a black room with high quality cameras.  Working on the 99th bowl.  Two videos on the torus, one on the making of and one on the explanation of the design process.

Sean – Working on the shoe storage bench.  Went to Las Vegas and hung out with Nick, Braxton, Ty, Moy, Raymond, Zac, and Tommy.  Put out a video on making a bow saw.

Brian – Made some bench dogs.  Under contract to write a book.  Worked on the credenza.

Ben Green-Hi Guys,

I wanted to know how you guys deal with the amount of excess attention from the ladies the hobby brings? It has started to become a real problem lately, I’m just fighting them off! I tell them that I am happily married, but it’s in one ear and out the other … They keep telling me how they’d like to have their wicked way with me across my table saw, ..and I’m like … Girl ..No! .. do you KNOW how dangerous that would be!? .. not to mention the issues it could cause with rust on the cast surface.
And don’t get me started on what happens when I whip out my domino!!

I’m at tipping point I tell you. It’s exhausting. The only upside is that it only seems to happen in my dreams when I’m asleep, but I wanted to know if you suffer from the same thing and how to deal with it?

What’s Going On In The Shop

Kyle – Finishing the double torus.  Video finished on the sprinter van.  99th vase/bowl is underway.  Started the “Flower of Life” table. 

Sean – The Urn is finish and veneering video is out.  Continuing work on the white oak Shoe Storage Bench, ordered the Seneca Domino XL ship and imperial thickness gauge for working with thinner stock.

Brian – The Credenza and the drawer retrofitting is still going.

Chuck – I enjoy your content, don’t like your language.

I feel like a bit of an old school church lady pointing this out.  Believe me my language is very peppery, not a saint  BUT when my kids are around I do clean it up.
You see I listen to you guys mostly in the car when I am hauling the kids to and from activities.  Still at that age when I can program what I want on the sound system.
Brian….too many God Damn’s and Shits, man, please!
A couple of years ago I had a concrete pad poured for my shop 24 x 40.  The crew was out for about 3 days. I am sure you guys know what a crew of flat work guys is like….let’s say a ship full of cut-throat pirates might look like boy scouts compared to these guys.  But whenever the kids were outside a loud audible call would go out by one of the crew (whoever saw the kids first), “Kid in the yard!” and the salty language halted immediately! I thought that was awesome and I had great respect for that gesture.
So maybe my point is…when recording think “kid in the yard”?

Jacob Spence – Hey guys,

I love the podcast and I started from the beginning so I’m not quite caught up yet but I have learned tons already.

My question is a simple one: I believe, when using a card scraper I have the same issue some people have with plane irons where the corners like to dig in slightly.  Would this be an issue with how I burnish it or user error possibly?  If neither of these are the problem would you chamfer the corners like on a plane iron?

Answer: User error, Jacob.  After proper tuning of your scraper you should flex the scraper with your thumbs pushing in the center and your fingers pulling in on the sides.  Tilt the scraper forward slightly until the burr engages with the surface and push to make a cut.  The corners should not be close to the surface of the wood.
